What is a nurse practitioner and what do they do?
A nurse practitioner is the highest advanced clinical practice nurse. They are trained at a master’s level and are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) the same as other medical professions. They work as an integrative part of your healthcare team and collaborate with your oncologist and GP to provide the best care for you.
Some of the things an oncology nurse practitioner can do include: Assessments, diagnosis, and treatments of side effects with your treatments. Order blood tests and if necessary, x-rays or ultrasounds. Prescribe medications as needed for side effects or symptoms from oncology treatments such as chemotherapy. This may include non-pharmacological treatments. Referral to other health practitioners. Education, counseling and support.
Services provided are also eligible for Medicare Rebates. Bulk billing available to concession and health care card holders or to those experiencing financial struggles.
